The Orvieto Last Judgment Reliefs
14th century
Stone relief
West façade, Orvieto Cathedral
In the
bottom left
the dead are resurrected for the final judgment and the righteous await their entrance into Heaven. In the
bottom right
the unrighteous are packed off to Hell. The prayers of the people in the
next register up
perhaps signify their status in Purgatory. In the
top register
Christ sits enthroned in a mandorla formed of the heads of angels. He is flanked by two sets of twelve men – perhaps the twenty four elders of Revelation 4:10. In the
register below
him are souls in Heaven.
